Today it is important to consider that Microsoft has secured 30% of the search market according to data from Experian Hitwise.

The new March numbers claim that Microsoft achieved 30.01% of the U.S. search market share in March — 14.32% from Bing.com and 15.69% from Yahoo Search, which Bing now powers. The growth was pretty evenly distributed as well: Bing.com’s search market share grew by 6% from February while Yahoo search grew by 5%.

Do I need to have a listing on the Bing Map Service?

Considering that Bing is now bring as much as 30% of the search traffic to businesses it would be foolish to not have a Bing Map Service integrated into your marketing plan. It is also interesting to note that Bing is still continuing to develop and innovate its map service.

A good example of this innovation would be that the Bing Map Service can now supply directions for public transportation. This is important to consider because before they only offered directions for walking and driving.

Microsoft has begun adding public transportation directions to its Bing Maps service, with directions available initially in eleven major North American cities. “Transit options are available for bus, subway and light rail”.

Another innovation that Bing is bringing to the table is the ability to locate a local food car. Did you know that there is probably one right in front of you. However, maybe there’s one up the street that’s better. Now you can find out about food carts with a new mapping layer from Microsoft for its Bing Map Service. Most locals know where the best carts are but now you will be able to find them when traveling through your favorite cities.

One thing is clear- “The Bing Map Service is here to stay!”

Clearly the divide between Google Maps and the Bing Map Service is going to continue to grow and fluctuate as search providers continue to innovate and cater to unique niches and as local customers choose to change search providers based on personal search preferences.
